Lantern trail
About
As Brighton’s leading community arts organisation, we remain committed to the ethos of a unique and inclusive event which commemorates the passing year and gives the people of Brighton an opportunity for reflection and celebration – perhaps this is more relevant than ever in this most unusual of years.
Burning the Clocks 2020 lantern trail
12 lanterns, one for each number on the clock, created by artists on display in some of Brightons independent shop windows. Supported by an app, you could follow clues to find lanterns locations. Posters in each lantern host window displayed a code to unlock the lanterns and offers. You could create and share a personal message when you unlocked the lantern from your mobile, reflecting your hopes & wishes for the following year. We received over 1,000 messages. View your responses. Anyone finding all 12 lanterns had a chance to win our limited edition Graham Carter print.
Awakening
An outdoor light trail of 12 illuminated sculptures. Awakening, a luminous garden of hopes and fears ; challenge and innovation; sadness and inspiration, is our response to the pandemic. Awakening (also known as the COVID Garden) was on on display at Brighton Victoria and Valley Gardens.

The Luck Dragon by John Varah
Dark clouds they gather
As the sun goes down
Challenges do abound
And such sadness hangs
The Luck Dragon sleeps
Then darkness comes
Those fears they grow
For loved ones lost
For their faces unseen
The luck Dragon stirs
So we gather up our tiny hearts
And join together to clap and cheer
For many drops do make a sea
And love can conquer all this fear
The luck Dragon wakes
