The Platinum Jubilee Pageant took place on Sunday 5th June 2022. It told the story of The Queen’s 70-year reign and our transforming society. The Pageant was played out in four parts.
Same Sky were part of the third act of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, Let’s Celebrate, which harnessed creativity, ingenuity, humour and community spirit
Theme: Have Faith
A celebration of religious Diversity. Looking at the idea of faiths and that the Monarchy is the ‘Defender of the Faiths’.
Same Sky artists made 6 big lanterns as simplified representations of the 6 major faiths, a Church, Synagogue, Hindu Mandir, Sikh Gurdwara, Islamic Mosque and Buddhist Temple, made from willow grown in Somerset. They are in white tissue with decorations on the lantern of flora and fauna referencing both the big sculpture and the natural British environment where these faiths meet practice and share their devotions nurtured and sheltered by the monarchs role as protector of faiths. They were pulled on moving dais with skirts decorated with designs from their individual faiths iconography.
We ran workshops with Southern Road Primary School (video below). The children made butterflies, doves and flower bud lanterns in response to Jenni Cairn’s large sculpture and the idea of the wonders of creation. The adults in these families carried decorated umbrellas decorated by the family groups.
Watched by over a billion people worldwide, it was an incredible experience parading down The Mall for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
