The current Covid-19 restrictions have made it impossible for us to produce the annual parade and fire show for Burning The Clocks, but that hasn’t stopped us creating some seasonal lantern cheer and a Brighton lantern trail for 2020.
Our artists are currently creating a set of iconic BTC lanterns to display in 12 of Brighton’s independent shop windows, celebrating the 12 key aspects that make up our much loved Burning the Clocks event, such as fireworks, samba and dancing. The lanterns will form a trail to follow through Brighton’s centre, close to the usual path of the parade.
Visit the lantern trail project page for up to date information and to view our artists progress.
We’ll be sharing the creative processes of the artists as they create these bespoke lanterns over the next few weeks. You can purchase our new 2020 special edition print ‘Luck Dragon’ from our regular artist and supporter Graham Carter from our online shop.
For those missing their involvement in the parade, we are also designing a simple lantern pack that people can make and hang in their window to mark the winter solstice on 21st December and show their support for Brighton’s wonderful civic events and festivals. All proceeds will go to support the future of BTC in these uncertain times.
Same Sky has received some support from the government’s Cultural Recovery Fund via Arts Council England, which we are matching with our own reserves and funds raised from our supporters through donations and our Crowdfunder
These generous donations will support many of our key artists by funding them to make bespoke themed lanterns that will form a trail through some of Brighton’s unique shops.
This is an exciting and safe alternative to our regular Brighton event, something that everyone in the city can get involved in, and we hope to return to the regular parade next year.
The Luck Dragon by John Varah Dark clouds they gather
As the sun goes down
Challenges do abound
And such sadness hangs The Luck Dragon sleeps
Then darkness comes
Those fears they grow
For loved ones lost
For their faces unseen The luck Dragon stirs
So we gather up our tiny hearts
And join together to clap and cheer
For many drops do make a sea
And love can conquer all this fear The luck Dragon wakes
